Hike in Canyonlands National Park, UT

December 2013: My sister Britta and I set off from Moab to Canyonlands National Park. Thick snow blanketed the red rock canyons we drove through. Mule deer and cattle loomed in the dusk, and we had to honk to clear the road of a herd of shaggy horses. We slept in the car and woke to frost floating down from the ceiling, where our breath had condensed and frozen in the night and was now melting loose. That day we hiked through Squaw Valley under brilliant blue skies, and met no one except our own footprints on our return. This is what we saw:
